MacBook User Guide
Hello and welcome to your new JBHA issued Macbook air. Please follow the instructions in this guide to ensure your MacBook is ready for school use.
Basic overview of the Device

First Time Setup:
Section 1: Powering on and signing into your device
Open up the laptop
Locate the laptop’s power button in the top right corner and press it.
(You will hear a startup chime and see an apple logo on startup.)
Once your device is powered on, you will be at the login screen. Please locate
the student’s named profile and click on it. A password prompt will appear.
Please enter the first time password “1.Student” and hit the “return” key.
(You will log into the desktop)
Section 2: Changing your account password
Click on “System Preferences” A window will appear in the center of the screen.
Click on “Users & Groups”
Click on your profile and then click the button “Change Password...”. From there,
follow the prompts and create a new password for yourself. (Please make sure it is a memorable password.)
Section 3: Signing into google chrome
This guide will help teach you how to add an account to your google chrome browser.
Add a person or profile
On your computer, open Google Chrome.
At the top right, click Profile . (Shown right)
Click Add. (Shown right)
Choose a name and a photo. (Shown below)
Click Add. (Shown below)
When you have created the new person, Google will prompt you to sign in to the JBHA Gmail account.
Section 4: Setting up Google sync
This section will instruct you on syncing your JBHA account to ensure that you have extensions installed onto your browser.
Sign in and turn on sync
To turn on sync, you'll need a Google Account.
On your computer, open Chrome.
At the top right, click Profile .
Sign in to your Google Account.
Click the turn on sync button (Shown Right)
Next click on “Yes I’m in” (Shown Right)
Then click on “link data.”
Click on your user icon on the top right corner of the browser.
If your account synced, your user panel should look like the image below saying that sync is on.
Restart your browser
Your chrome browser should now have the extensions installed.
Section 5: Allowing Camera and Microphone on Google Meets
Go to Google Meet and join a meeting
In the top left corner, a box will appear
asking for camera and microphone
permissions. Click “Allow” (Shown right)
Your camera and microphone will now be
enabled.
Section 6: Setup to Type in another language on your Mac with input sources
To type in a different language without a keyboard designed for that language, add an input source for the language, then switch to it when you want to use it. You can type in any language that uses the same script or alphabet as the current input source.
Add input sources
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Input Sources.
Click the Add button, then search for a language (such as Hebrew). If it has an input source (such as Handwriting), select one or more.
Click Add.
After you add an input source, the option to show the Input menu in the menu bar is automatically selected. The Input menu lets you quickly switch input sources as needed.
Switch between input sources
To switch between input sources on your Mac, do any of the following:
You can also press the Option-Control-Space bar keys to select the next input source in the Input menu, or the Control-Space bar keys to select the previous input source.
Use the Caps Lock key: If you set an option in Input Sources preferences to change input sources by using the Caps Lock key or a dedicated language switching key (for example, “中 / 英” on Chinese – Pinyin, and Chinese – Zhuyin keyboards), press the key to switch between a non-Latin input source (such as Chinese or Korean) and a Latin input source (such as French or English).
To check your settings in Input Sources preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Input Sources.
Use the Fn key or the Globe key: If you set an option in Keyboard preferences to change input sources by using the Fn key or the Globe key (if available on the keyboard), press the key to display a list of your input sources, then continue pressing the key until the input source you want to switch to is selected. The list disappears automatically.
To check your settings in Keyboard preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Keyboard.
Troubleshooting Your Device
If you begin to experience your device slowing down or have issues with any applications, please try the following steps first.
Step 1: Restart your device
Restarting your device can go a long way to help improve the performance of your computer. I would recommend restarting your device every 2-3 days if you are using it regularly. If you are not using your device for an extended period, please turn your device off.
To restart or run off your device, please follow these steps.
Bring your cursor to the top left corner of your screen and click the apple icon.
(A drop-down menu will appear.)
Click on either the “Restart...” or “Shutdown..” option.
Step 2: Perform a PRAM Reset
If you are still experiencing performance issues or applications are not working correctly after restarting your device, the next step would be to perform a PRAM reset.
To perform a PRAM reset, please follow these steps.
Shutdown your device using the instructions from the above section.
Locate the buttons “Command”, “Option,”, “P”, and “R”.
Tap the power button and immediately hold down all 4 of the buttons above.
Hold the buttons until you hear the startup chime a second time.
The computer will boot back into the login screen once it is complete.
Step 3: Soft Power Reset
Shut down your Mac.
Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release the button.
Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.
Step 4: SMC Reset
Shut down your Mac.
On your built-in keyboard, press and hold all of the following keys. Your Mac
might turn on.
Control on the left side of your keyboard
Option (Alt) on the left side of your keyboard
Shift on the right side of your keyboard
Keep holding all three keys for 7 seconds, then press and hold the power button
as well. If your Mac is on, it will turn off as you hold the keys.
Keep holding all four keys for another 7 seconds, then release them.
Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.
Step 5: Contacting Helpdesk
