Tech Byte: Password Strength
Check the strength of your password with https://howsecureismypassword.net/
Which password do you think is the strongest?
Password12345 OR beliefromanianbridgeprofit
greenapplebuttertables OR gp%9y#k&yFm?
July27dog OR swimmingiPhonesunderDV
Swimming iPhones Under DV OR swimmingiPhonesunderDV
Tips to Create a Strong Password:
Use a unique password for each of your accounts, re-using passwords is risky especially if they are the same ones for your online bank accounts and email
Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols in your password
Don’t use personal information such as birthdates, addresses, or social security numbers (should be obvious)
Keep passwords secure and NOT on a sticky note on your laptop or next to your desk, or in folder titled “my passwords.” Use a trusted password manager like 1Password, Keychain, or Dashlane. Check out more options here. Info on how to manage your saved passwords in Chrome here.
-
Consider a PASSPHRASE!
Add words to create a phrase you will remember
Add capitals for emphasis
Add punctuation for creative flair
Add spaces to add further complexity (your brain will like this)
Final layer of security, add BLOCK capitals
-
Use 2-step authentication for added security
Should be set up for DVFS Gmail account (Gmail Get Started)
2-step verification requires you to have access to your phone, as well as your username and password when you sign in
If someone steals or guesses your password, they still can’t sign in to your account because they don’t have your phone
Change your passphrases periodically
